This was a very good, well written historical romance but it took me a little while to get into because it wasn't quite what I was expecting. The goodreads blurb made me think it was a more typical spinster and the rake type story but it was much deeper than that. Lydia and James are complex characters and a bit difficult to get to know as are sometimes hiding their feelings even from themselves. And while this is definitely a traditional romance in that it is the story of Lydia and James's relationship there are also more complex family dynamics than you typically see. I was glad that these relationships didn't all have an easy solution. This was my first Meredith Duran book but I'll certainly look for others when I want something a little more "meaty" but still with an HEA ending.
